Rolex 6239 Daytona Cream Double Swiss “Tropical”

Every legend has an origin, and the present example stands at the very genesis of what would become one of the most iconic and universally recognized wristwatches ever produced: the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.

Originally slated to bear the name “Le Mans,” Rolex ultimately concluded that its largest market might find the French pronunciation challenging, leading the manufacture to adopt the now-legendary Daytona moniker instead. While the name would go on to become synonymous with motorsport and chronograph excellence, the present watch represents the Cosmograph in its purest and earliest form—a reference point from the very beginning of the Daytona story. Retaining a host of characteristics exclusive to the first production examples of 1963, it stands among the rarest and most desirable configurations for collectors, made all the more extraordinary by its exceptional state of preservation.

Foremost among these distinctions is the coveted “Double Swiss” grené dial, a feature reserved exclusively for the earliest Cosmographs. During initial production, the word “Swiss” was printed too close to the dial’s outer edge and became partially obscured once the movement was cased. Rolex’s solution was to add a second, more prominently positioned “Swiss” higher on the dial, inadvertently creating one of the most fascinating and collectible dial variations in Daytona history. Furthermore, the cream hue grené finish is primarily exclusive only to the Mk1 and quickly discontinued the following year. Equally significant is the presence of the Mk1 bezel, distinguished by its unique 275 tachymeter graduation and finely hashed numerals. Produced only briefly during the model’s inaugural year, this bezel was discontinued shortly thereafter, making surviving examples exceedingly scarce.

Among the handful of Double Swiss Daytonas known today, this example unquestionably resides in the upper echelon. Beyond its remarkable originality and full-specification Mk1 configuration, it is elevated further by a set of flawless chestnut-brown tropical sub-registers that impart warmth, depth, and character seldom encountered on any Daytona, let alone one of this significance. The 923,xxx serial case remains exceptionally crisp and confident, retaining the strong architecture expected of a watch preserved rather than restored. Complemented by its original thin elongated hour and minute hands, every component speaks to an extraordinary level of integrity.

More than merely an early Daytona, this is a benchmark example - an extraordinarily preserved survivor from the dawn of the Cosmograph lineage. Combining rarity, originality, condition, and undeniable visual charisma, it represents as one of the most important Daytonas in existence. For the most discerning connoisseur, this is not simply a trophy piece; it is one of the defining examples of the breed.
