Rolex 5508 Gilt Submariner “Exclamation Dial”

During the earliest era of gilt Submariners, Rolex produced its watches without crown guards. Known among collectors as the “Small Crown” or no-crown-guard (NCG) era, the reference 5508 represents the final chapter of this distinctive design. Produced for only four years, ending in 1962, the 5508 culminated with the “Exclamation Dial” - the final dial execution of this clean, unguarded case design before Rolex introduced the reference 5512 and its crown guards.

Within the progression of vintage Rolex collecting, stepping into a gilt Submariner represents a meaningful leap. Experienced collectors understand that the distinction is subtle but significant; the character, depth, and visual warmth of a genuine gilt dial fundamentally change the way a watch presents within a collection. Yet finding the right example requires patience and a discerning eye, as countless candidates may be passed over before one truly worthy example appears.

For many collectors, the natural entry point into gilt Submariners is a 5512 or 5513, simply because more examples exist in the marketplace. Far rarer, however, is a gilt Submariner from the earlier NCG era. These watches are particularly challenging to find in exceptional condition, with their thinner lacquered dials being especially susceptible to aging, crazing, and deterioration over the decades.

This example represents precisely the kind of NCG gilt Submariner that defines the final chapter of the Small Crown era. Most notably, its beautifully preserved mirror-gloss Exclamation Dial remains remarkably free of the crazing that commonly affects these dials. It is complemented by an original, thick-beveled, unpolished case, falling squarely within the correct 763,xxx serial range.

The original luminous plots remain full, bright, and beautifully intact, perfectly complemented by the original hands. There is a quiet charm to the way these components have aged together naturally. The clarity and vividness of the gilt printing are often among the most revealing indicators of preservation on a gilt dial, and here they provide a remarkably clear impression of just how carefully conserved this watch has remained.

The period-correct “Long 5” insert frames the watch, adding another important element of originality and balance to an already exceptional example.

Inside, the robust Caliber 1530 remains remarkably clean and retains its original butterfly rotor, further reinforcing the watch’s overall originality and preservation.

In every respect, this is an extraordinary 5508 Exclamation Dial. We have handled very few examples with this combination of dial preservation, original luminous material, untouched case definition, and period-correct components. Finding a 5508 in this level of condition is not simply rare, it is an exceptionally tall order.
