Rolex 1675 GMT Master Mk1 Zinc Sulfide

Originally engineered for the skies, the Rolex GMT-Master was purpose-built for aviation, offering a dual-time function tailored for pilots traversing multiple time zones. Yet, over the years, it has transcended its utilitarian roots to become one of the most revered icons in Rolex’s professional lineup. Its enduring allure is no doubt amplified by the captivating spectrum of dial variations and bezel inserts—each configuration lending a deeply personal identity to every piece, fueling its cult-like following.

Among the most legendary references in the GMT-Master lineage is the 1675, produced from 1959 to 1980—a remarkable 21-year run. It ushered in several key innovations: the introduction of crown guards for enhanced protection, a re-engineered rotating bezel for improved grip, and the debut of the now-iconic anodized aluminum insert. Early models featured gilt dials, which later evolved into matte dials starting in 1967, marking a transitional moment in both aesthetics and technology.

This particular example is classified as a "Mk1 Zinc Sulfide" dial—a rare and short-lived configuration that represents the earliest matte dial executions. Carrying over traits from the gilt era, it’s distinguished by its puffier zinc sulfide luminous markers, which fluoresce vividly under UV light, and a small 24-hour hand—both signature attributes of this transitional generation. These early matte dials are beloved for their bold texture and luminous character, offering a distinct look unmatched by later iterations.

A standout feature of this watch is its original fuchsia bezel insert, an anomaly in the GMT world. Produced only briefly during the Mk1 matte production runs, the fuchsia insert offers a striking deviation from the more common red-and-blue "Pepsi" insert. Time—and service replacements—have rendered these original fuchsia bezels exceedingly rare, making them one of the most coveted collector components today.

What elevates this watch even further is its exceptional provenance. On July 29th, 1968, U.S. military pilot Dennis Malchow acquired this 1.68m serial Mk1 GMT-Master from Geneve Watch Co. in Hong Kong, during a mission abroad. Over the course of his career, Dennis transitioned from military to commercial aviation, and throughout, he remained a devoted steward of this timepiece—meticulously preserving every original document and maintaining the watch in extraordinary condition.

The watch's "thin case" profile remains sharp and well-preserved, its proportions unaltered by time. The fuchsia bezel has aged into a beautifully nuanced hue, complementing the flawless Mk1 dial, whose luminous plots have matured to a rich, creamy patina—one of the most charming we’ve encountered. Recently fully serviced, the watch keeps great time at -6 s/d.

This is more than just a 1675 GMT. An early reference-grade Mk1 GMT-Master that embodies everything collectors dream of: rarity, condition, desirability, and exemplified provenance. Opportunities like this don’t just come around—possibly in totality like this will not appear again any time soon.
