Rolex 1655 Explorer II Mk2

The Rolex Explorer II reference 1655, often nicknamed the “Orange Hand” or “Freccione” for big arrow in Italian stands out as one of the most iconic and charismatic models from Rolex’s professional line in the 1970s. Its bold orange 24-hour hand gives it an unmistakable identity—one that’s nearly impossible to confuse with any other reference. That distinctiveness, combined with its vintage charm, has made it a cult following among serious collectors.

Launched in 1971 and produced for over a decade, the 1655 was originally designed with spelunkers and cave explorers in mind. Spending extended periods in darkness, these adventurers needed a way to differentiate between AM and PM hours—hence, the prominent 24-hour indication and its vibrant orange hand.

This particular Mk2 example is among the most remarkably preserved 1655s to surface in recent years. Featuring an unpolished 3.8 million serial case, its sharp edges and original finish are rarely found in such pristine condition. While many of these steel bezels have dulled over time from wear, especially from friction with shirt sleeves, this piece retains its original crispness and factory finish. The dial, hands, and luminous material are equally exceptional—bright, vibrant, and consistent with the best examples known.

Although the 1655 was once a slow seller at retail, it has since gained cult status and become one of the most sought-after vintage Rolex references. However, truly outstanding examples are few and far between. This watch is undoubtedly one of the finest I’ve encountered in recent memory—a piece any collector, novice or seasoned, would be proud to own.
